Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, though the color varies depending on the presence of impurities.  An iridescent, rainbow-like sheen in rainbow obsidian is caused by inclusions of magnetite nanoparticles 

Against an intense light , one can see lovely green and purple streaks in this stone,
